IBM has sent out a memo to its 400,000 Windows users instructing them NOT to patch XP with M$'s new Service Pack 2! "Microsoft would expect any well-run IT organization to make the same recommendation. The company has recommended all along that customers thoroughly test SP2 before deploying it to ensure compatibility and avoid unforeseen problems..."

Isn't that comforting...

(updated): I have managed to find out about some of the apps that are breaking when SP2 is installed - some of them are mission critical for a lot of companies. Among them:

• Autodesk's AutoCAD 2000, 2002 and 2004 releases;
  
• BMC Software's BMC Patrol for Windows 2000;
  
• Computer Associates' ARCserve and eTrust 7.0 releases;
  
• Macromedia's ColdFusion MX Server Edition 6;
  
• Symantec's AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0 and Ghost Server Corporate Edition 7.5; and
  
• Veritas' Backup Exec version 9 and Volume Manager 3.1 products.
  

It seems a lot of networking apps are getting killed by SP2's firewall, and a lot of games are getting dissed as well...

(additional update) The list is now over 200 apps large and includes stuff like Unreal Tournament, McAfee VirusScan 7, Adobe PageMaker 7, backup programs, Zone Alarm personal firewall and even some flavours of Microsoft's own Office applications.
