Scary statistics
From the AP Wire
WASHINGTON Apr 14, 2005 — More than 10,000 fugitives wanted for murder, rape, child abuse and other crimes have been arrested in the largest coordinated crackdown by federal, state and local law enforcement officials in history.
These are without a doubt bad people, but my first thought was - police state here we come!
...
At the same time, however, those arrests represent just 1 percent of the 1 million fugitives in the FBI's national database, according to the Marshals Service. story
1 million fugitives?! This doesn't count the millions that are already in jail! The US already has the world's highest incarceration rate. It comes out to something like 1 in 35 adults behind bars. If current trends continue, it means that a black male in the United States has about a 1 in 3 chance of going to prison during his lifetime. For a Hispanic male, it's 1 in 6; for a white male, 1 in 17. What the hell is wrong with this picture?!
What the incarceration rate doesn't address is the families of those in prison. All the kids that don't have a father or mother, all the parents that watch their children rot in jail, and most of all what the prisoner and his/her family will face AFTER the jail time is served.
The consequences of the American way are staggering...
