euthanasia
Should euthanasia (what some people call "mercy killing") be legal in the US? It already is in some countries like the Netherlands. The AP just ran this story:
A hospital in the Netherlands -- the first nation to permit euthanasia -- recently proposed guidelines for mercy killings of terminally ill newborns, and then made a startling revelation: It has already begun carrying out such procedures, which include administering a lethal dose of sedatives.
I can't imagine what is going on in the minds of the parents who have to make a decision like that. All I know is that if I ever got terminally ill and lived in constant pain, I'd want the option.
(Edited to add) "experts acknowledge that doctors euthanize routinely in the United States and elsewhere, but that the practice is hidden."
