If I don't die by Thursday, I'll be roaring Friday night.
Seems to me that in Iraq and Afghanistan we're winning the battle and losing the war. The war is really about convincing the hearts and minds of other cultures that we aren’t a threat, that we respect their way of thinking and that we want to do business and culturally interact with them in a mutually profitable way. This isn’t a war against countries, it’s a war of ideas. Yes, there are groups of people who are willing to use acts of terrorism to further their goals, but those groups, like Al Queda, aren’t defined by national boundaries. To invade a country to stop them is like poisoning a pond to kill a single fish.
Asking the UN to leave New York is a signal that we no longer consider ourselves the world leader. Now we are above the law. We no longer care what the world thinks of us, because if a country, or group of countries, doesn’t agree with our current policy we can use overwhelming force to coerce them into capitulation. Is that diplomacy?
If a man holds a gun to your child’s head would you use every tool you have available to stop him? Of course. Would you then go on to kill that man’s employer, his family, and then destroy his country and friends and everyone associated with him to prove that your cause is just?
